One thing I'm curious about for the Ruziboev Buckley fight is whether Buckley will try to grapple. The one clear weakness I've seen in Ruzikboev's game is whenever he's put on his back. He's typically flat with both shoulders to the mat and he's not great at using his legs from that position either. He typically explodes to get up or reverse but it's mostly strength and not good technique.

I'm also interested to see if Ruziboev adopts a clear counter striking game plan for this one. He always looks like a counterstriker to me even though he also likes to explode in with punches or flying knees. But doing the latter has gotten him punished in many fights by his opponent timing a double on him and Buckley definitely has that ability.

I guess I lean Ruziboev but there are some questions about the grappling and also how he'll look at 170. I do think he has lead in his hands though. The reach of a Kevin Holland with the power of a John Lineker, that's a scary combination.

Definitely a mixed bag when it comes to WMMA fighters coming off of +2 year long layoffs. Ashlee Evans Smith, Julia Avila and GDR all didn't fair well in their recent returns. Tatiana Suarez and Veronica Hardy are the lone exceptions I can think of.

I think Ricci is a pretty good fighter who arguably won her last fight. I always find it difficult to take skilled but inactive fighters. Two years ago Torres wins this fight. Now, I'm not sure. I'm a very firm believer in "its hard to get better at something that you're not actively doing".

I strongly urge anyone putting money on Buckley vs. Ruziboev to rewatch Buckleys fight with Imavov. Ruziboev is good but he's not on Imavovs level yet. Buckley took Imavov to hell and back and made him seriously earn that win.

Watching it right now and I have to disagree with that characterization. I think Imavov won it quite comfortably. It wasn't a blowout which is what had people impressed with Buckley. He took rd3 on two scorecards after Imavov gassed a bit.
I definitely think Buckley has heart and will give it his all every time he fights. Which is a great quality to have to be sure.

He has struggled a bit with tall fighters though, Imavov and Holland. Even Di'Chirico who just had 2 inches of height on him but that probably made the difference in him being able to land that head kick.
The one exception is Arroyo who was doing well until he death-gassed which was always his story, he could never retain cardio with his frame in that division.

Edit: Ruziboev might not be on Imavovs level technically but I think he has a lot more power in his hands. Imavov landed a counter right on Buckley's chin many times over when Buckley creashed in and I can see Ruziboev doing the same with more devastating effect.

I wasn't insinuating the fight was close enough that Buckley might have won. I just said he made Imavov earn it, which like you said is represented by the fact that Buckley clearly won the 3rd round. I bring this fight up not just because Imavov has a similar frame to Ruziboev, but it's a great fight that showcases how tough and game Buckley is. Ruziboev is good but half of his record is suspect. Even taking that into consideration, he's 2-6 in fights that go to decisions and hasn't seen a 2nd round in 4 years.

I really think Ruziboev has his work cut out for him but this is my pick for FOTN. If Ruziboev can handle this weight cut no problem this fight could be really interesting. Two guys with totally opposite body types who are both freakishly strong. I think I like Buckley more because I could see this fight going the distance and if that happens I think he probably wins. I could also see either guy finishing this fight. It's a tough call that I'm still kinda flip flopping on, but I'm mostly leaning Buckley.

If Ruziboev fights for a 2nd time in 6 weeks, cuts extra weight, and finishes Buckley in front of his hometown then he's a bad, bad man. He will have proved he's legit and completely silenced the haters if he pulls this off.

Yeah I agree it's a very interesting fight. I watched a lot of tape of these guys today. I think the reason why Ruziboev lost a lot of decisions is that most of those fights he got grappled and controlled on the ground. Anyone that tried to stand with him for the most part got finished quickly.
I'm very interested to see how he does on the scale. The fact that he fought so recently I don't think is a big issue since he finished the fight quickly with no resistance. Dumas was a bit of a deer in headlights in that one. Buckley fought on the same card and against Luque so if anything that would be more of an effort on his part in terms of fighting recently. The weight cut though could be a challenge for Ruziboev, we don't know.

Prediction Comments

Predictions: 5 of 12 Winners, 3 Perfect, 350 Points   |   Tied for 3566th

Lewis vs. Nascimento
Rodrigo Nascimento, SUB, R3
Lewis will gas out quickly looking to get a KO in round 1. See way too many people expecting a 39 year old to go out there and one shot KO a grappler.

Buckley vs. Ruziboev
Nursulton Ruziboev, TKO, R1
Buckey hasn't been KO'd in a while and is a kill or be killed style of fighter. I think the reach will be incredibly hard for him to fight through.

Menifield vs. Ulberg
Carlos Ulberg, DEC
Ulberg is good but I see both these guys slugging until they get tired. Both are hard to put away.

Ferreira vs. Rębecki
Mateusz Rębecki, TKO
No one should be getting knocked out by Mateusz Gamrot

Caceres vs. Woodson
Sean Woodson, DEC
This will be a standup fight. Sean woodson's reach should be problems he always has that advtanage and still manages to look awkward as **** in the octagon. Decision.

Cortes-Acosta vs. Despaigne
Robelis Despaigne, TKO, R1
Wow what is the line on this one. I know robelis is new to the UFC but come on this is obvious. Cortes-Acosta's strength of schedule is ******* horrific.

Hooper vs. Borshchev
Viacheslav Borshchev, TKO, R2
I love both these guys but Slava has some of the cleanest boxing in the Lightweight division and Chase Hooper is not great at taking a punch unfortunately. Chase hooper's style is fundamentally jiu-jitsu based so I have a hard time seeing him shooting takedowns on takedowns until Slava gases. Slava KO Lock it

McKinney vs. Ribovics
Esteban Ribovics, TKO, R1
Trusting Terrence McKinney is like trusting a Plan B 72 hours after conception

Ricci vs. Torres
Tabatha Ricci, DEC
Rule #1 follow if you don't know

Hadley vs. Johnson
Jake Hadley, DEC
Both got drowned by Cody Durden and are untrustworthy, will be a fun fight to watch, coinflip. Hadley is younger and faster but Charles Johnson will most likely be cut if he loses so I expect him to come out ready to perform.

Gooden vs. Jousset
Kevin Jousset, DEC
idk

Aldrich vs. Hardy
JJ Aldrich, DEC
Rule #1 follow if you don't know it

Slava vs Hooper is so hard to predict. Slava has a huge advantage on the feet and Hooper has just as big of an advantage on the ground. Slava's takedown defense sucks and Hooper is a BJJ nerd with garbage takedowns. Someone probably gets finished either way, just depends on if Chase can get Slava down or not.

Billy Goff vs Trey Waters

Predictions: 6 of 12 Winners, 0 Perfect, 300 Points   |   Tied for 4150th

The amount of love I see for Billy Goff amazes me. Yes he’s high volume, but he is an absolute punching bag. Gets hit a lot, and gets cracked. Trey Waters in my opinion, is faaaar more technical, and much more patient. Personally, give me the ex LFA champ, with better experience and competition.  Would not be shocked to see Goff actually get dropped and finished here. I just don’t know what everyone sees in Goff is all.

Ahahha. Just saw your comment before I posted my post. Based on tape, he is an absolute punching bag. And I think he will struggle against fighters who are technical, and are able to maintain distance.
